SIENA11.ASSIGNMENT: Urban Space Analytique - Piazza Indipendenza

We were each assigned a building or space and became familiar with the urban space over time (sketched, pictures, videos, etc). We were then asked to prepare a one page analytique, analyzing the physical characteristics and represent the piazza in a coordinated series of drawings (communicating graphically with minimal to no text). As a beaux art method of analysis the graphics are meant to show relationships among the drawings.
The purpose of the assignment was to understand the piazza graphically and represent/communicate the analysis to others. In my Analytique one can see the separate elements I concentrated on that I thought highlighted the piazza. A lot of the detail was drawn in pencil or inked after the watercolor (which I never really mastered therefore was afraid of ruining the drawing with it).

SIENA11.ASSIGNMENT: popUP Piazza Model - Prato di Sant’Agostino

We were each assigned a building or space and became familiar with our piazzas of time (sketches, pictures, videos, etc). We were then asked to prepare a three dimensional model of the piazza using only one sheet of A3 watercolor paper; no removing, severing, or adding of any paper. It also needed to be self standing; no tape, glue or support of any kind.
The purpose of this assignment was to analyze the piazza spatially and to represent/communicate the analysis to others. It took a while to set up the drawing on the A3 paper before watercoloring and cutting (more specifically, it took 3 tries on scrap 11x17 before the final). In the end it was also hard to make my popUp Piazza pop up.

SIENA11.ASSIGNMENT: Lorenzetti Good.Bad Redux - Collage

In the Good and Bad Government portrait negative and positive virtues are demonstrated and shows how they affects the town and its people, from the countryside to the inner city. A similar, yet more sinister, description of humanity and its sins can be found in Dante’s Inferno. This describes a realm made of 9 different “circles” or levels, each being worse than the next as you descend towards the worst level imaginable. In my portrayal of a Good and Bad government I incorporated these sins and virtues to built the collage in such a way that mimics Dante’s representation of the levels. The higher you look on the piece the more pristine, the lower you look more destruction is seen.

At its highest point one can see “Paradise,” which is meant to describe how pure a country and community can be if they have a good government foundation. At its lowest point one is asked and made to wonder if it is possible that we are “the real animals.” One is shown treachery violence, anger, etc. And even at its highest level, with a bad government, the country and community is still layered with negativity (lust gluttony greed, etc). There is a central area, the base of what may be a good or bad government – depending on how these are manipulated a government and its community with either succeed or fail.
